Stretch marks obtained from bodybuilding are the direct result of tearing of the middle layer of the skin, or more specifically, a breakage of collagen and elastin cells. A large weight gain in a short period of time pulls on the inner layers of skin, causing tearing. When the tears heal, scar tissue forms and appears on the surface of the skin as stretch marks. The use of steroids increase the rate of the increase in muscle mass, and the skin cells cannot keep up, and thus tearing occurs.

To prevent stretch marks due to body building, try to build muscle mass slowly. As you are doing this, try to lose any extra weight to balance your increase in muscle mass and reduce the stress on your skin. Use a cream that promotes skin regeneration and collagen production. These creams will regulate the production of glycosaminoglycans, which are major components of skin that help to prevent tearing and scarring. Also, stop smoking because smoking reduces the elasticity of your skin.
